Fernandes handing over Lotus title with head held high

Tony Fernandes said his squad's final race under the Lotus banner would be an emotional affair, but that everyone in the team was already focused on a bright new future as Caterham. The row between car company Group Lotus and Fernandes' Team Lotus over the right to use the Lotus brand in Formula 1 lasted over a year before a recent agreement was reached.Fernandes had gained the rights to use the famous name for his new team shortly before Group Lotus decided it want to enter F1 too as a title sponsor of the Renault outfit.

Neither side was willing to back down, with Fernandes acquiring the licence to the 'Team Lotus' title always associated with the original F1 team and not the car company - and which had not been sold to Proton along with most of the Lotus business when it hit its crisis point in the mid-1990s.A court row failed to resolve the deadlock, but eventually both sides agreed that having a Lotus-backed Renault team and a Renault-engined Lotus team was a disaster for F1.Fernandes will therefore rename his team Caterham next year, having acquired the British sportscar firm, and Group Lotus is free to rebrand Renault fully as a new era Lotus team.

Lazenby to present F1 on Sky?

The BBC/Sky story has been pretty quiet recently. Mark Thompson said in a BBC radio interview last week that the highlights shows for the races the BBC don't show live will be 75 minutes. No confirmation yet on whether full ace replays will be available on any platform. We know that the BBC will show the British, Monaco and Brazilian races next year. Sky get to pick the next 3 races and then the choosing process alternates 1 pick at a time. The Daily Mail reported this week that Sky are still chasing Martin Brundle for their coverage and that Simon Lazenby could be the presenter. I don't have Sky so don't know much about Lazenby but he seems to be highly rated and worked with Sky's head of F1 on their Rugby coverage. Also interesting to see that the latest follows on his Twitter account are the Ferrari and Red Bull feeds.

Motor racing-F1 rivals would welcome raver Raikkonen's return

The 2007 world champion, who quit Formula One to go rallying at the end of 2009 but remains hugely popular with the fans, has been linked to a seat next season at Williams although the team have made no public comment.Raikkonen has confirmed to Finnish reporters that he has had talks while Williams shareholder Christian Toto' Wolff said this week that he was one of several options under consideration.

Some of the Finn's former rivals said at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix that they would welcome his return.
I have no idea whether that is happening or not, said Team Lotus's Finnish driver Heikki Kovalainen.
If Kimi decides to come back, I think the main difference for me will be that the parties after the races will be a little bit better.Raikkonen, so often unforthcoming and monosyllabic in news conferences, had an off-track reputation as a party animal during his stint in Formula One with Sauber, McLaren and Ferrari.

Among other exploits, he once entered a powerboat race in a gorilla suit as 'James Hunt' and was also photographed asleep on a bench with an inflatable dolphin outside a Spanish nightclub.I had a few drinks and danced. Why not? Raikkonen was quoted as saying afterwards.

Michael Schumacher, the seven-times world champion whose place at Ferrari was taken by the Finn at the end of 2006, enjoyed some memorable post-season parties with Raikkonen. The German, who made his own comeback last year after three years out, was reluctant to offer any advice but could see potential for entertainment.I would be very happy to see him back. We have had some very good times and I look forward for some on track and off track occasions -- it will be good, he said.

Getting back into the groove after a couple of years away might not be too difficult, though. In the end, you think how much can you recall your potential. How much can you drive the car to its limit. That is the main concern that was answered right away at the first test, said the 42-year-old of his own case.

Three F1 Teams Changing Names for 2012

It's not quite silly season yet, but the fun has already begun in Formula 1, with three F1 teams, including Lotus Renault, Team Lotus and Virgin Racing, planning to adopt new monikers for the 2012 season.

There has been more than a bit of confusion around Lotus, with two teams this year claiming the name of the iconic brand established by the late Colin Chapman in the 1950s.

Next year, pending approval of the World Motor Sport Council, the former Renault works team will be known as Lotus and will drop the name of the French carmaker from its present Lotus Renault GP moniker.

Meanwhile, the one called Team Lotus, which came into F1 in 2010 by taking the place of BMW after that team withdrew from competition, will shift to another name with British sports-car lineage, Caterham. Team Lotus Enterprise acquired the Caterham company earlier this year.

Another one of F1's new teams, Virgin Racing, will shed the name made famous by Sir Richard Branson's airline and other ventures using that label. The team will be called Marussia, owing to the buy-in to Branson's F1 team by the Russian auto manufacturer Marussia.

Renault Sport F1 will continue to supply engines to both teams presently using the Lotus name. The Lotus Renault squad directed by Eric Boullier will use the black and gold livery of the 1970s and '80s, made famous by drivers Mario Andretti and Ayrton Senna. The Team Lotus entry headed by Tony Fernandes will use the British Racing Green and yellow colors that became iconic with the great Jim Clark in the 1960s.

Italian GP qualifying: Vettel chalks up another

Here’s one we bet you didn’t see coming – Sebastian Vettel will start tomorrow’s Italian Grand Prix from pole position. A fairly straightforward session saw the world champion edge out Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren by half a second, with Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso putting in impressive displays to make the second row. Mark Webber and Felipe Massa have got work to do from fifth and sixth, while Petrov, Schumacher, Rosberg and Bruno Senna also made it through to Q3.
It’s all getting a bit silly now, isn’t it? With 10 pole positions from 13 races, Vettel is well on his way to pipping Nigel Mansell’s record of 14 poles in a single season. True, seasons are a tad longer these days but still – there’s a strong chance we’ll see the Red Bull driver’s name etched into F1′s history books by the end of the year.
Here’s how they’ll line up for Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix:
1. Sebastian Vettel
2. Lewis Hamilton
3. Jenson Button
